STASH OR PASS: Maybelline Better Skin Foundation #BetterSkinChallenge

I was recently sent a full sized sample of the Maybelline Better Skin Foundation to test and review from +Influenster  The shade that was sent to me was Warm Honey. This foundation claims to...
  • Improve the skins appearance every minute you are in it. For Brighter more even stress free skin through the antioxidant power of ACTYL-C which is a more durable form of Vitamin C
  • Claims that it won't clog the pores
  • And it claims to protect the skin with it's built in suncreen SPF 20

So what are the supposed benefits of this antioxidant. Because our skin is exposed to a variety of free radicals DAILY, exposure to UV light, environmental pollutants, exposure to microbes and more, when the skin is exposed to oxygen our skin reacts so by adding the antioxidants it reacts with the free radicals protecting our skin from skin cell damage.
Which is why this product is almost considered a skincare product because it's meant to improve the skin giving you better skin in 3 weeks so it says.

I love the branding package of this product and the fact that their foundation is in a pump. It makes it fully practical for the everyday woman! SO THUMBS UP FOR THAT MAYBELLINE. You are listening! I love the finish of the product. it's very creamy and blends out well.

Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation consist of 12 Shades

So as I mentioned I was sent the lighter shade in Warm Honey which was unbelievably TOO LIGHT for me. So in order to even bring this review to you all and be a part of the #BetterSkinChallenge I had to go find a darker shade. I had a hard time finding coconut which is the darkest shade available in this collection which is disappointing. But Coconut is actually my shade in the Maybelline Fit Me Foundation. So after  2 weeks of looking for it I found it in one of the Walgreens I didn't expect to see it in. Actually I found it by accident.

So of course I had to do some customizing to these two foundations just to make it work for me. In certain areas of my face the coconut was perfect but once the oxidation takes effect it does some weird thing alone. Why because when foundation goes into contact with your skin and the oxygen hits it the chemistry between your skin and the foundation will cause the foundation to change colors. So a way to fix that is by putting a barrier between your skin and the foundation. That barrier would be a primer. Also if you set the foundation with a powder it will slow down the oxidation.

{FAITH TIP} How to stop a foundation from oxidizing?
There are several things you can do. 4 STEP PROCESS
 1. You want to make sure you skin is clean and all the oil is removed from your face. Because what causes oxidation is the chemistry of moisture between the skin, the product, and the oxygen. After your cleansing process you can remove excess oils with either blot paper or a two ply tissue paper.
2. Apply a primer. The primer will act as a barrier between the skin and the foundation.
3. This is another step before the application of the foundation. You can apply a light base of pressed translucent powder and that will be another barrier.
4. Apply foundation then over the foundation set it with a layer of translucent powder and I guarantee you not only will it not transfer but it will not oxidize.

So setting it with 3 different powders did help a lot. The texture of the foundation is creamy and has a nice coverage. It's not heavy at all. I would say it's a cross between a cc cream and a medium coverage foundation. It's definitely worthy for summer. Why because it has a weightless feel, but you are getting a decent coverage that's not too heavy and thick. What I did notice is it does transfer.

{FAITH TIP} How to stop a foundation from transferring?
So the best way to fix that is by setting the foundation with a loose powder and a setting spray would help keep everything in tact and will prevent your foundation from moving and transferring.

As I mentioned I did have to customize this foundation to make it work completely for my complexion. So what you see above in the photo yes it is Maybelline foundation but I added dimension with +Aj Crimson in #6 & 8 foundation. If it wasn't for AJ's foundations Maybelline Superstay Better Skin foundation would have been totally flat on me.

  • It has a great consistency
  • It's not heavy
  • Has built in sunscreen protection
  • antioxidant that aids in the protection of the skin from free radicals
  • It does not clog the pores
  • Great Packaging, Maybelline really thought about the functionality of the foundation. Adding a pump was a great branding move.
  • The foundation does last throughout the day. Especially if you set it.
  • Does not have a great range of shades for WOC (Women of Color) which leads me to customizing
  • It transfers
  • It will oxidize
  • I had to work too hard to make it work for me

Overall I would give this foundation a C+ Here is why. The good does outweigh the bad when it comes to numbers. It is a pretty decent foundation HOWEVER whenever you have to do so much just to make a foundation work for you that's not good. It defeats the purpose. If I have the time and just want to play in makeup then yea I guess it wouldn't be much of a problem. But I don't like spending money on something that I have to adjust.  I love Maybelline and I know they can do better. You want to know how I know? I complained about them adding a pump to liquid foundations and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that complained. And they listened and added a pump to this new set. So I know they can do better and are listening. This foundation is not worth me personally investing in. I am a makeup artist and I can customize however this brand is suppose to be for the everyday women. The woman that walks into the store to find a foundation that fits her complexion. The average woman don't have time to customize let alone figuring out how to make it work. When they buy a foundation they want to get something that works. So this is a pass for me for now. And I'm truly disappointed that a company like maybelline would produce a collection and neglect the women of color. Maybe in the future +Maybelline New York DE will consider adding more darker shades for us. Once they do that the grade will jump from C+ to an B+ or higher. And I may consider making this foundation one of my go to foundations.

My video review of this foundation will be up, I also did a full day review of this product to let you see how it works throughout the day.
