Things That You May Not Know But Should Know About Essential Oils

DISCLAIMER: I am not a health physician nor a doctor. I am a person that loves all things beauty. I am not licensed in this area. I've done my research and used my experience to share what I've learned but it's not written in stone. Use this information and form your own opinion. Do your own research and as always consult with a license Health Physician.

What inspired me to write about this is because Essential Oils are a trending topic and because the digital age are now being taught by youtubers who know nothing and they are being inspired by instagram famous people that also know nothing and I think it's my duty to share and enlighten those who don't know. Ignorance is bliss but it shouldn't be that way because ignorance can cause a lot of damage and has caused a lot of damage.

Essential Oils are concentrated fragrance oils that are extracted from plants and is far more concentrated than regular oils. If used properly essential oils can be so beneficial to the mental & physical health! It can soothe, calm the skin, and even heal the body.

But I'm not here to talk necessarily about the benefits but to raise awareness of what could happen if you misuse essential oils. I've seen horror stories of the misuse of essential oils and the many bad experiences and I want to remind you that just because something is natural doesn't mean that precautions shouldn't be taken.

I run by this motto that I say ALL THE TIME...

And I'm here to spit that knowledge of the warnings and risks of essential oils + safe ways to use them effectively so your story won't be horrifying!

A thing you must know is...

1. Because essential oils are highly concentrated the best way to use them is to dilute them.

  • 256 pounds of peppermint leaf to make one pound of peppermint essential oil
  • 150 pounds or more of lavender flowers to make one pound of lavender essential oil
  • Thousands of pounds of roses to make 1 pound of rose essential oil
This is the reason why its important to dilute essential oils because undiluted essential oil on the skin can cause irritation and or allergic reactions.

**NOTE: Some oils such as lavender, rose and chamomile are considered safe to use on skin undiluted. But although they are safe I would not take the risk on the skin if not diluted.

2. Always do patch tests. As mentioned before that some essential oils are ok to use undiluted but that's if you don't have skin sensitivity. And the only way to know that is to do a small patch test diluted and undiluted. Every individual is different so don't base what you do off the next person. Take all precautions!

3. Sun Exposure. Essential oils are more sensitive to the sun which is why many citrus essential oils have a warning on the bottle that exposure to UV light can lead to blistering, discoloration of the skin, chemical burns from sun exposure. Oils that are considered sensitive to UV light are... orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot.

In all things especially when pregnant you should check with your health physician because some essential oils have negative effects on pregnancy. But as mentioned earlier everything is individualized and it's a matter of how it's being done. As mentioned always dilute if using essential oils topically. Always read the labels and do your research especially if you're new to using essential oils. Start slow.

I've heard mix stories but everyone seemed to be pretty consistent on these oils and believe that you shouldn't use during pregnancy.
  • Clary Sage which is often used during labor safely by midwives
  • clove
  • fennel,
  • Sage
  • Thyme
  • Horseradish is said to not be used by anyone
  • Oregano
  • Wintergreen
  • Mugwart also shouldn't be used by anyone
  • Peppermint is said to decrease the supply of milk while nursing so avoid using while nursing
I've seen longer lists of oils not to use but the only way for you to find out is to consult with your physician. I've heard that some pregnancies make you sensitive to certain scents and nauseous. I've heard stories where pregnant women would take one drop of peppermint oil because it would settle their nausea. But it's per person and if you're new to pregnancy the last thing you want to do is hinder your pregnancy because of the misuse of essential oils. These things are a blessing from God but you must do all things in moderation including moderation and you must use common sense. It's wiser to consult with your health physician because its no longer just you but now you have to consider your baby.

Also some things should be common sense but if we as adults have to take precautions for essential oils and have to dilute these oils what make you think that we shouldn't do the same or even more for the babies and children? Children and Babies are still building up a tolerance level, immune system and are just as sensitive to things. Some oils can cause reactions such as seizures, respiratory issues. I don't want to scare you all but just want to raise some awareness and enlighten those who reads this post!

Please know that despite the warnings essential oils are a gift from God and they have amazing benefits but even natural foods we have to eat in moderation. Too much fiber is not good, too much protein is not good although they are healthy substances. We just have to be wise in what we use and how we use it. Essential Oils have been known to heal certain illnesses and diseases that were said to not be curable. So don't think that these things are horrible. There is not one thing on this earth that we shouldn't use in moderation including Water. My father is a dialysis patient and he has to drink fluids in moderation because too much fluids make it hard for him to breathe because he has a weak kidney which was the cause of it all. There are a lot of things he can not eat that are healthy but it's bad for a kidney patient. So take this post and learn. I go back to the quote, Everything in Moderation Including Moderation. You have to be wise and do your research and some things the only way to know is to try it but always dilute the essential oils when using it.

If you ever need more information on essential oils outside of the research that you do find a aromatherapy therapist in your area that is trained and certified. Ask for their certification and look that certification up.
